SWD, or Short Wave Diathermy, is an electrotherapy treatment used in physiotherapy to relieve pain, reduce muscle stiffness, and promote tissue healing. It uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves to generate deep heat inside body tissues. This heat improves blood circulation, relaxes muscles, and helps reduce inflammation in affected areas. SWD is commonly used for conditions such as arthritis, back pain, muscle spasms, joint stiffness, and sports injuries.

During the treatment, the patient is positioned comfortably while electrodes or condenser pads are placed near the affected body part. The machine then produces electromagnetic energy that passes through the tissues and creates therapeutic heat. The treatment is painless, and patients usually feel a gentle warming sensation during the session. A typical SWD session lasts around 15 to 30 minutes depending on the patient’s condition.

There are two main types of SWD: continuous mode and pulsed mode. Continuous SWD mainly provides heat for chronic pain and stiffness, while pulsed SWD is often used for acute injuries where less heat is required. Physiotherapists select the appropriate mode according to the patient’s needs and medical condition.
